Augmentative Communication

Our vision is to create supportive environments where people with developmental disabilities can communicate their thoughts, needs, and feelings through augmentative communication. Communication is a basic human right. Every person should have a way to express themselves and be understood by others.

Augmentative communication includes tools and strategies that support communication when speech is limited or difficult. These may include picture boards, communication books, gestures, symbols, or digital communication devices. These tools help individuals share ideas, make choices, ask questions, and participate in conversations.

We believe communication systems should be person-centered and adapted to each individual’s strengths and preferences. With the right support, people can develop confidence and independence in expressing themselves.

Our goal is to create opportunities for individuals to use augmentative communication in everyday activities, such as learning, leisure, work, and social interaction. Staff, families, and community members will also be encouraged to learn how to support and respect different communication styles.

Our long-term vision is a community where everyone’s voice is heard and valued. By promoting augmentative communication, we empower people with developmental disabilities to participate fully in their lives and communities.
